Why is fall prevention important?

Every year, hundreds of thousands of older people in Germany suffer a fall with serious consequences. Especially in Berlin, where many seniors live alone, fall prevention is a central topic of elderly care and health prevention.

Simple measures for more safety

1. Remove tripping hazards - Secure loose carpets with non-slip pads or remove them entirely - Lay cables properly and secure with cable ties - Remove thresholds between rooms or add ramps

2. Good lighting - Install night lights in hallway and bathroom - Motion sensors for automatic light in dark corners - Bright, glare-free LED lighting on staircases

3. Grab bars and aids - Install grab bars next to toilet and shower - Shower stool or shower chair for more stability - Raised toilet seat makes standing up easier

4. Proper footwear - Sturdy, non-slip shoes with thin soles - Avoid soft slippers without heel fixation - Orthopedic insoles for gait instability

5. Exercise and balance - Regular balance exercises (Tai Chi, Yoga, physical therapy) - Many health insurance companies offer free fall prevention courses - Walks in fresh air strengthen muscles
